How to Calculate Exhaust Fan Size

1. Determine Total Airflow (CFM)

Layer chickens require a maximum ventilation rate of about 12 to 15 CFM per bird during peak summer heat to prevent heat stress.

\(\text{Peak\ CFM}=10,000\text{\ layers}\times 15\text{\ CFM/bird}=150,000\text{\ CFM}\)

2. Select Fan Size and Quantity

Standard agricultural exhaust fans are rated by their CFM output at a typical static pressure of 0.10 inches of water column (WG).

  • 50-inch Cone Fan: Usually delivers around 30,000 CFM.

  • Calculation: 150,000 CFM ÷ 30,000 CFM/fan = 5 fans.

  • Setup: Install 5 units of 50-inch fans (or 4 units of high-performance 54-inch fans) to ensure proper tunnel ventilation.

3. Verify Air Exchange Rate

A well-designed poultry house needs a complete air exchange every 45 to 60 seconds. Ensure your total fan CFM matches or exceeds the total cubic volume of your specific house layout.
